My love of photography began when I was about twelve walking for miles in the fields and countryside of my village in Scotland. I was fascinated and entranced by the sense of heightened awareness that looking for pictures gave me.
Slicing and stealing a moment in time to admire later always seemed like some kind of special magic to me and its what continues to fuel my passion for photography today.
I love to create an atmosphere or situation where people, motion, energy and time converge and the images just flow.
One of the great things about shooting is that it offers a gateway into other worlds.
Swimming with humpback whales in Vava’u, Tonga. A calf, just weeks old, brushed me with his tail fluke as he swished past to get a better look at my camera. His mother, who was the size of a double-decker bus, came within inches of me and rolled her curious calf away with the greatest gentleness and respect I have ever seen.
Being rescued by an amazing lifeguard Baywatch style in San Diego whilst shooting in the surf, after being dragged seemingly miles out by a really wide, fast riptide, with heavy underwater camera gear around my neck. I lay on the surfboard like a wet seal as she stood and surfed me to shore.
Photographing, feeding and being bumped by circling sharks with Bond movie stuntwoman Michelle Cove, seventy feet under the Caribbean.
Being driven crazily around the streets of Red Bank, New Jersey shooting Kevin Smith in a parallel car. As we screeched around with him driving and hanging out of the window, a portrait session turned into an action movie still. He loved the shot for Arena and chose it for the cover of his autobiography.
Sitting with David Lynch in his home cinema in Beverly Hills, talking about his passion for transcendental meditation and peace palaces.
Getting a request from a very special ape called Chantek for a bottle of 'good water' when I took a break from shooting a story for the Sunday Times Magazine, about an orangutan taught to sign and raised as a human baby. He will always be one of my favourite shoots.
Being photographed by Tony Blair after receiving three national photography awards from him.
Watching and photographing a pair of courting Tufted Coquettes in Trinidad. A dazzling little hummingbird, the most stunning birds I have encountered.
